Egypt Builds 6-Mile Wall Along Rafah Border

With American encouragement and financial support (to the tune of $23 million) and with the technical input of the US Corps of Engineers, Egypt has begun building a 6-mile long Wall along its border with Gaza.

According to news agency reports, this Wall will have a steel section, which would be impossible to penetrate, and will be sunk 20-30 meters below ground. The intention is to block all tunneling activities by Gazans aimed at creating  links between Gaza and Egypt for the passage of their much needed daily food supplies. These underground links are considered a lifeline for the Gazans in the face of Israel's inhumane and illegal blockade of the Strip.

The Wall will reportedly take 18 months to build thus sealing the Gaza Strip completely. This shameful project must be condemned by the international community especially as the one-year anniversary of the criminal Israeli onslaught on the Gaza Strip approaches (27 December 2008 - 18 January 2009).

Who Will Be Next ?

The United Nations, the United States and the European Union have all called on Israel to stop the illegal eviction of Palestinians and the demolition of their homes. Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, urged Israel to end its "provocative actions" in East Jerusalem, while calling for it to freeze all settlement activity in the occupied West Bank. Despite that, the sight of Palestinians in East Jerusalem being forced out of their homes has become an all too familiar scene.

Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland reports from occupied East Jerusalem.

The Berlin Wall is Gone but Israel’s Apartheid Wall Still Stands

In writing this, I’m bracing myself for being called an anti-Semite, an appeaser of terrorists and propagandist for the Palestinian cause. I’m none of those things. I say this simply because these days, it seems, anyone who dares criticise the policies of the Israeli government leaves themselves open to such accusations.

Amira Hass is a regular columnist with Israel’s Ha’aretz newspaper and the only Israeli journalist to have spent several years living in and reporting from Gaza and the West Bank. On Tuesday 20th October 2009, Hass was awarded the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Women’s Media Foundation. CNN’s Christiane Amanpour described Hass as “one of the greatest truth-seekers of them all.” Hass talks about her covering the Israel-Palestine conflict, the Goldstone report on the Israeli assault on Gaza, and the need to understand the issue in the context of military occupation.
